Hey guys :)
Even though this beautiful little town is in Slovenia now, it has been part of the Venician dominion for cenuries; and during the 20th century was even part of the united Italy. It has been made part of the former Yugoslavia only in 1946. Now it is probably the most beautiful coastal town of Slovenia. If you just walk through the little streets of the historic center, you will see that much of the Italian atmosphere has survived in the city up until today. Welcome to Piran.
The very center of the town is the Tartinijev trg / Piazza Giuseppe Tartini. Once a marina, today sitted up and paved, it forms the most iconic square of the town, providing the most lovely view of this Italy-like architecture all around.
Just pass the red Venetian house which represents the adriatic Gothic and start climbing up to the St. Jury church and monastery, dominated by a tall bell tower that provides beautiful sights of the whole peninsula.
Speaking of views, while you are up there, don't forget to visit the medieval town walls. The entrance costs 2 euro and the view is worth it. Especially if you find yourselves there at sunset. You are only one glas of wine far from perfection.
When we are talking about what to do or not to do, you should not forget that you are still at the adriatic coast. While there are no beaches in Piran, there are multiple ladder at the town's main promenade that will take to you right to the sea. And apparentl, it is quite warm till late September, so what are you waiting for? :D
Is the weather bad? Well, no disaster. Whether you are a fan of marine life or just getting bored, there is an aquarium right next to the Tartini Square. And if you are of a wee bit more adventurous nature, you can book a trip by boat with a glas bottom providing you underwater view firsthand.
Now, speaking of boats, let's talk a bit how you can actually reach the town. There is a small international airport in Portorož, about 10 km far away. But honestly, flights arrive there like once a week, so if you wanna fly to Slovenia, your destination will probably be thecountry's capital = Ljubljana. Then it is 2 or 2.5 hour bus drive to Piran.
Alternatively you may fly to Trieste and then go by bus which is quite quicker, the Airport in this Italian city does not however serve that many flights. Driving to Piran is another option, just be prepared that the center is a pedestrian zone and you will need to leave the car outside. There are several parking lots on the waterfront and it wil cost you 17 euro per day.
I hope I have hyped you enough and you are starting to want to visit this Slovenian pearl. Maybe we'll meet there.
Have a nice day
Lex :)
