There is not much land in-between the Sierra de Tramuntana on Mallorca and the Mediterannean Sea but on this small strip of land, hidden in a green valley, you will find this little picturesque town that remains one of the most popular tourist destination in the whole of the Balearic Islands. Welcome to Valldemossa.
Located some 30 minutes bus trip from the island's capital Palma, Valldemossa is a ideal destination for a half-day trip when you're staying there. Just head out to the Placa d'Espanya, cross the road and find a bus station. You will need to go underground, pass by the metro station and there will be what looks like a parking lot. This is your place. Just catch a bus going to Soller and don't forget to get off at the station Valldemossa. The trip should cost 3 EUR.
So, once you're there, what is it actually that makes Valldemossa so popular? Let's check out some of the places you shouldn't miss.
Cartoixa
One of the most well-known landmarks of the town is the 13th century charterhouse. For 9.50 EUR you can visit most of the interiors of this Carthusian monastery, enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains from numerous open courtyards and visit the former royal palace of the Kings of Majorca.
Chopin Museum
The cell number 4 in the charterhouse is occupied by the Chopin museum. Valldemossa is well known for this composer's long stay. In the museum, you can find his original piano as well as a lot of information regarding his life.
Just make sure to pick up a separate ticket, the entrance fee to the charterhouse does not cover this.
Serra de Tramuntana
One of the highlights of Valldemossa is actually the mountain range around. It provides many breathtaking viewpoints of the town and natural phenomena in the neighborhood. There are plenty of marked paths (for example one called The Archduke Way) which give probably the best photo options for all amateur photographers among us.
The Oldtown
But if you really want to breath in the atmosphere of Valldemossa, just walk the little picturesque streets that had changed very little in the past centuries. And once you are tired of walking the hills and stairs, just sit at some of the many restaurants, have a lunch, a beer or a glass of sangria and enjoy your afternoon.
I hope I gave you many reasons to visit this picturesque little town and if you are in Mallorca, maybe give it a try. I'm sure it will worth it :)
