Wroclaw - Useful Info
Have I made you excited enough to want to visit Wroclaw? Then this article may be the right thing for you? Do you wonder how to get there, how to get around and simply anything there is to know about this town/city? Then keep reading:)
Getting there
There are basically all kinds of forms of transportation you can use if you want to find yourself in Wroclaw.
If you arrive by plane, you will arrive at the Wroclaw-Copernicus International Airport (WRO). This is one of the most popular way throughout Poland since you can get your Ryanair flight ticket as cheap as 5 euro for one-way route from various places in Poland and rest of Europe. Very popular is its connection with Warsaw or Gdansk. There are also many interesting long distance international flights that can take you to Oslo, Stockholm or Reykjavik for literally a few bucks.
You can choose to arrive by train. In this case, you will end your journey at the newly reconstructed Wroclaw Glowny train station (sometimes referred to as Dworzec PKP on street signs). There are plenty regional trains going to various towns in the neighborhood (I would highlight Poznan or Walbrzych) but there are also direct trains to Katowice, Krakow or international trains to Zgorzelec/Görliz and Dresden in Germany. So pick your destination and all aboard :)
Anyway, if you are already there, spend some minutes discovering the railway
There are also very popular long distance bus connections to almost all major cities in Poland (Warsaw, Gdansk, Katowice, Krakow, Rzeszow) serviced by the PolskiBus company or a slightly more expensive Flixbus buses to whole of Europe (most popular probably Berlin, Dresden and Prague).
Getting around
There is quite extensive tram network that will take you to the most of the tourist attractions of the city. If you need to get further to the suburbs or to the airport, you will need to take a bus. (Be aware that the trip from the main railway station to the airport may take up to 1 hour in rush hours, so be on time). The ticket for 30 minutes costs 3 PLN, ticket for one hour 4,40 PLN. NIght fare are a bit more expensive (3,20 for a single journey).
Timetables and route planner can be found here
Wroclaw Public Transport
Also note, that the city center (and also the Centennial Hall with the ZOO) are within the walking distance from the main railway and also bus station.
Language
The most spoken language is obviously Polish so if you are fluent in it, then good for you.
If not then do not panic. Most of the signs in the city (at least in the center) are bilingual and at least the merchants and tourist info workers will speak and understand english. This is a little worse with the general population, however with the raise of popularity of the city and new growing generation, the situation has quite improved.
WIth the older generations, you may try German or Russian to get by.
Currency
Although Euros are generally accepted in the city center, the exchange rate is horrible and you may want to exchange your money at some Exchange place or (preferably) in a bank. I personally usually prefer withdrawing money directly from the ATM: These are very frequent all around the city and you shouldn't have any problems finding any. The exchange rate is around 1 euro for 4,2 PLN.
Hope you enjoyed my set of tips and will be back again :)
See you soon from another city :)
