Hi guys, I am back with my next post. We will leave Prague for a while and move across the border. Today we will enjoy sights of an old silesian city, a true metropolis of the region, today and in the past - Wrocław.
As you can see, you find Wrocław (also know under its german name Breslau) in southern Poland, about 40 kilometers from the czech border. For most people, this is definitely not the number one tourist spot on the map of Poland, but I have visited it for a weekend this summer and was very pleasantly suprised how amazing the city felt.
Let's see together the TOP 5 things you should see or do in Wroclaw.
1/ Ostrów Tumski
This former island on the Oder river (ostrów is polish for island) is the oldest part of the city and quite a tourist centerpiece. The most important landmark, that actually makes up a significant part of city's skyline, is the Wroclaw cathedral. The gothic church was built in the 10th century and up to this day serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Wroclaw. Inside, you can see the older organ pipe in Poland, just among other interesting miracles of culture, architecture and art.
2/ Old town square and town hall
The gothic 13th century town hall (ratusz in polish) is one of the most wellknown landmarks of Wrocław. Along with the surrounding market place (rynek) forms the center of the city. This is where most of the tourist tours start, this is where most people take their first selfie. So enjoy the astonishing view, take a guided tour in its interiours or just sit in one of the old town square's restaurants and relax.
3/ Centenial hall
One of the most interesting landmarks of Wroclaw lays a wee bit further from the city center. Take a tram number 1, 2, 4 or 10 and visit this wonder of socialist architecture. A multipurpose space serves many conferences, congresses, exhibitions or concerts; also many of the city specific events take place in the centennial hall grounds.
Situated right next to the hall, do not miss the singing fountain - the largest fountain in Poland that offers interesting sound and light shows every hour from March to October.
4/ Wrocław Zoo
When you are at the Centennial Hall, just walk across the street and you can visit the older ZOO in Poland. The Wroclaw ZOO is home to more than ten thousand animals of over a thousand species and if you are there, do not forget to visit its Africarium/Oceanarium with the most astonishing aquariums. The price is only 45 PLN. (a little over 10 euro)
5/ Wrocław Głowny and Dwarfs
The main railway station in Wrocław is not only the main travel hub for the city, but also a wonder of architecture and is worth your visit even if you do not travel by train. The main pseudogothic building makes a great first impression of Wrocław, just like the park that surrounds it. And don't forget to touch one of the dozens of "Wroclaw dwarfs" - statues of dwarfs that have decorate many of Wrocław's streets since 2005. More about the Wroclaw Dwarf Hunts may come in one of the future posts.
So do not forget to follow me and check regularly for the new content.
Don't stop traveling :)
