As usual, let's see what are the TOP 5 things you should definitely not miss out when visiting Brussels. (Btw, Brussels is officially bilingual so I will try to provide you with both names, Dutch and French as well.)
1/ Grote Markt / Grande Place
One of the most famous European square offers some unforgettable views of 300 years old buildings and some of the most memorable landmarks of Brussels, the Gothic Town hall with the 96 meters high city tower, the Museum of the city of Brussels and once in two years in August you can enjoy millions of colorful begonias forming the well known Flower carpet.
2/ Manneken Pis
I will mention this statue for it is one of the symbols of the city. A little sculpture of a peeing boy can be found a few blocks from the Grand Place. Just don't be disappointed with the size of the thing. Some people may have problems without glasses. On the other hand, there are not many better ways to increase your self esteem
3/ Atomium
If you are however really looking for THE symbol and landmark of Brussels, you need to travel a little further from the city center. A kind of a leftover from the Expo 58 world exhibition, this unique creation embodies the idea of universality till this day. For 11 euro you can enter the upper sphere and enjoy interesting views of the city. (Just don't forget that it really is merely in the suburbs, so prepare some binoculars. But just walk around the structure and enjoying it majestic beauty is worth your time :) And don't forget to take a selfie :D
4/ Parc du Cinquantenaire / Jubelpark
The iconic Arc of Triumph of Brussels maybe smaller than its older brother in Paris, but the more beautiful and picturesque it looks. Take metro 1 and exit at the Schuman station. The park itself is worth a walk on its own, but head east towards the Arc de Triomphe-Triomfboog. You can visit the Royal Museum of Armed Forces and while you at it, don't forget to climb up the terrace and enjoy view of the historical parts of the town. It is for free :)
5/ Berlaymont building
While probably not the fairest example of architectional beauty, this building is a monument of something more. There are not many places or buildings that would serve as the symbol of the European union and the integration itself as this seat of the European Commission. Just take a walk from the Parc du Cinquantenaire to the city center and enjoy the atmosphere of the "European quarter" on Rue de la Loi. Nowhere else you will find so many monuments and memorabilia of the European Union and Brussels as its de facto Capital.
